Coachella Promoters Launching NYC-Area Fest

Radiohead January 15, 2008, 1:40 PM ET Ray Waddell, Nashville Sources say Coachella producers AEG Live/Goldenvoice will stage a summer festival with major headliners at Liberty State Park, just across the Hudson River from lower Manhattan. The event will not carry the Coachella brand. Liberty State Park has hosted a handful of concerts in recent years, most notably a Radiohead show shortly before the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The new event gives AEG/Goldenvoice a major summer presence in the area, where it will compete with the new Vineland festival. That event, promoted by C3 Presents and Melvin Benn’s Festival Republic, will be held Aug. 8-10 at a 500-acre, privately-owned farm in Vineland, N.J., about 40 minutes outside of Philadelphia. Meanwhile, an announcement is expected in the coming days revealing the lineup for this year’s Coachella festival, to be held April 25-27 in Indio, Calif. Report says it’s bound for the tri-state area

The Coachella Valley Music And Arts Festival is heading for the east coast, it is being reported.

The festival is still scheduled to take place at it’s usual location of Indio in the Californian desert, but an additional festival is apparently in the works.

According to Perezhilton.com, it will take place in New York or New Jersey in August. The website quotes an unidentified source in the news piece.

Press officials for Coachella were unable to confirm the report today.

A new east coast festival called Vineland was confirmed late last year on NME.COM. It is being put together by organizers of Lollapalooza and Reading/Leeds Festivals.

Well, kids, the fever is taking hold and while rumours are flying over who will or won’t play at the 2008 festival, one kind soul has actually decided to make it his quest to clear the confusion by doing the legwork for us and is hosting the results of his research on a site we can all go drool over.

The Breeders Return With Mountain Battles

Mountain Battles, the first LP from those Deal sisters and their Breeders since 2002’s Title TK, will be released on 4AD April 7 in the UK and the following day in the U.S. Recorded off and on over several years and as many locales, with recording assistance from the likes of Steve Albini, Erika Larson, and Manny Nieto, the disc sports a baker’s dozen of Daytonian pop blasts, including the recently Forkcasted “We’re Gonna Rise”. Drummer Jose Medeles and bassist Mando Lopez, who played on Title TK, also appear on Mountain Battles.

Kim recently spoke with Rolling Stone about the album, on which she claims to have done “a little more with overdubs” than on the band’s sparser back catalog (we’re gonna assumed Albini wasn’t involved with that sordid business). Generally balking at that sort of unnatural adornment, Deal says she threw caution to the wind with Mountain Battles, occasionally deciding, “let’s have a guitar part that obviously nobody in the band can be playing right now.” Kelly apparently sings a passable cover of the Spanish-language song “Regalame Esta Noche” despite a complete lack of fluency in said tongue, while Kim takes her linguistic passport to Germany on “German Studies”.

As if a new Breeders album wasn’t enough, full U.S., UK, and European tours are in the works for next year, including a spate of shows at this spring’s South by Southwest festival, Toronto’s Canadian Music Week and, yes, an appearance at Coachella. All those dates have yet to be firmed up, but you folks just got a Coachella confirmation, so I’m sure you’ve got plenty to talk about in the meantime.

The Deals do have one date on the way, though you’d better hurry: Kim and Kelley will make an appearance tonight (12/4) in Chicago at the Second City’s “Letters to Santa” benefit for needy children.

A report yesterday summarized the geological surveys from the past 10 years in and around the Coachella valley. Some parts of Coachella have sunk up to a foot in that time span. Hopefully the good folks in the valley can figure out how not to use so much water…

For those of you who think that you may not have had enough of the Fire after Coachella - or for those unfortunate few of you who got SHUT OUT of tickies (sorry Bonocore, I warned you), Arcade fire will be playing The Greek Theatre in Berkeley on Friday, June 1, 2007.

At $31.50 per seat, its not the cheapest show in town by a long shot, but if you loved them for their first release, Funeral, (lets allow critiques of Neon Bible to remain dormant), this gorgeous summer venue might just soothe your soul.
